actually it means something like "mercy" or "savior" in chinese, since it's the kanji!

perfect_frilleperfect_frille on April 28th, 2009 07:18 pm (UTC)
優美

this means "grace" in both chinese and japanese. literally the words mean "graceful beauty" but it translates to "grace".
xthinislovex on April 28th, 2009 07:25 pm (UTC)
OHHHHHH, thanks.
so what I looked up earlier is kanji, does that mean it's not japanese?
perfect_frilleperfect_frille on April 28th, 2009 07:27 pm (UTC)
it's both japanese and chinese; kanji means japanese script derived from chinese script! i don't really know how to explain it, it's sort of like, dialect? the script is the same but is read and pronounced differently, even though the meaning stays the same.
xthinislovex on April 29th, 2009 05:03 pm (UTC)
oh, that makes sense.
perfect_frilleperfect_frille on April 28th, 2009 07:15 pm (UTC)
hahaha I'm Chinese by heritage.
xthinislovex on April 28th, 2009 07:16 pm (UTC)
so what'd be the japanese character?
:]
perfect_frilleperfect_frille on April 28th, 2009 07:21 pm (UTC)
the japanese have 3 different scripts: kanji, katakana and hiragana.

kanji is derived from the chinese script. katakana is the script used when writing a foreign term, while hiragana is the phonetic script. for example, you use hiragana to figure out how to pronounce a kanji.

Chinese alphabets are not kanji.
Japanese alphabets are hiragana, katakana, romaji, and katakana.

before you consider getting anything like that i would STRONGLY recommend doing a lot more research than it seems you've done so far. as you already know, tattoos are PERMANENT, and you don't want to go and get something done only to find out that it doesn't even mean what you intended for it to mean.... which is basically what almost happened with this one. it's great that you're asking for help from members here and everything, but i wouldn't rely solely on that either. i mean.....really. this is going to be on your body for the rest of your life.
xthinislovex on September 8th, 2009 01:48 pm (UTC)
ha, yeah. I actually know a Japanese guy and intend to ask him, or the Japanese teacher at my school thanks for your concern! :D
